The Algarve has over 100 beaches, from tiny cliff-backed coves you scramble down to reach, to long golden stretches with full facilities. These 15 are the ones worth planning your trip around.
How to Choose Your Algarve Beach
The Algarve coast splits into three distinct zones, each with its own character:
- Western Algarve (Sagres to Lagos): Dramatic cliffs, smaller coves, wilder water
- Central Algarve (Lagos to Albufeira): The classic golden limestone, sea caves, sheltered beaches
- Eastern Algarve (Faro to Vila Real): Long barrier island beaches, calmer water, fewer crowds
The Icon: Praia da Marinha
Consistently ranked among Europe's top 10 beaches. Limestone arches frame turquoise water, and the snorkelling is excellent along the cliff base. Arrive before 10am in summer to get a spot.
The Hidden Gem: Praia dos Três Irmãos
A series of interconnected coves near Portimão that you walk between through rock tunnels at low tide. Most tourists never make it past the first cove.
For Families: Meia Praia, Lagos
4km of golden sand with gentle waves, lifeguards, and beach restaurants. Shallow water stays warm and calm, making it the safest swimming beach for young children.
For Adventure: Praia do Amado
On the wild west coast near Carrapateira. Consistent surf, dramatic cliffs, and a sunset that turns the whole beach gold. Several surf schools operate here year-round.
For Caves: Benagil Beach
Small beach at the base of the cliffs where the famous Benagil cave is located. You can swim or kayak to the cave from here (about 100m). The beach itself is tiny, so it fills up fast.
The Secret: Praia da Ingrina
Tucked into a tiny bay near Vila do Bispo. Crystal clear water, almost no development, great snorkelling. You need a car to get here, which keeps the crowds away.
For Couples: Praia do Camilo, Lagos
200 wooden steps down to a tiny double cove framed by golden cliffs. It's the most romantic beach in the Algarve, but gets crowded by midday.

- Water temperature: 16°C in April, peaks at 22-23°C in August-September
