"Made Heads – New Expressions in Artisanal Practices" opens in July and runs until mid-September, using the cabeçudo — the large papier-mâché head worn in carnival processions — as a point of departure for contemporary artisans exploring what traditional craft can become. The show is less about preserving the past than about seeing what happens when skilled hands take an old form and make it speak to the present.

The cabeçudo is a fixture of village festas across Portugal, a character both comic and slightly unsettling, built from layers of paper and paste and painted in bold, exaggerated features. It belongs to a world of communal celebration, where craft serves ritual and entertainment rather than gallery display. This exhibition asks what happens when that form is taken seriously as an artistic medium, when the techniques are preserved but the intentions shift. The results, judged by the premise, are likely to be varied, inventive, and rooted in making rather than concept.

Palácio Gama Lobo is a handsome historic building in the centre of Loulé, a town that has managed to retain its working character despite the tourist traffic. The palace's interior is cool and high-ceilinged, a good setting for craft that deserves close attention. The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from nine until six, and Saturday mornings until one, giving you several windows to visit depending on your schedule. Loulé itself is worth more than a quick stop: the Saturday market is one of the Algarve's best, the old town has narrow streets and good cafés, and the Moorish castle offers views over the tiled rooftops.

This is not a show that demands hours of your time, but it does ask for some willingness to engage with objects that sit between art, craft and cultural memory. If you are interested in how traditions evolve, or in the skilled work of making things by hand, you will find plenty to think about. Families with children old enough to appreciate craft and storytelling may enjoy it, though toddlers will not. The palace is centrally located, so parking can be difficult, especially on Saturdays; arrive early or use one of the public car parks on the edge of the old town and walk.

The exhibition runs through the height of summer, when Loulé is warm and busy. Morning visits are more comfortable, and the palace's thick walls offer relief from the heat. If you are staying anywhere in the central Algarve — Vilamoura, Quarteira, Almancil, or even as far as Albufeira or Faro — Loulé is an easy drive or bus ride, and the exhibition pairs naturally with a morning exploring the town's markets, churches and traditional shops. It is a small, thoughtful show that rewards those who take the time to look.
