Faro's Municipal Museum partners with Lisbon's prestigious National Museum of Ancient Art to present Olhar a Paisagem (Looking at Landscape), an exhibition exploring how Portuguese artists have depicted the natural world. This collaboration brings exceptional works from the national collection to the Algarve.

The exhibition forms part of the MNAA's MNAA está aqui (MNAA is here) programme, which shares the national museum's treasures with regional venues across Portugal. It's a rare opportunity to view significant artworks without travelling to the capital.

Through carefully selected paintings and other works, the exhibition invites visitors on a journey through Portugal's landscape traditions. You'll discover how artists across different periods and styles have interpreted and represented the Portuguese terrain, coast and countryside.

The show offers particular resonance when viewed in the Algarve itself, where the interplay of light, sea and land has inspired artists for centuries. After viewing the exhibition, you can step outside and experience the very landscapes that have captivated Portuguese painters.

This exhibition appeals to art enthusiasts, landscape photography fans seeking inspiration, and anyone interested in how culture and environment intersect. It's also an excellent rainy-day option or escape from intense summer heat.

The Municipal Museum occupies a handsome historic building in Faro's atmospheric old town, within the ancient city walls. The setting itself enhances the experience, with the museum's traditional architecture providing an elegant backdrop for the artworks.

Faro is the Algarve's capital and transport hub, easily reached by train, bus or car from anywhere in the region. The old town is compact and pedestrian-friendly, perfect for combining your museum visit with exploration of the cathedral, city walls and traditional streets.

Allow at least an hour for the exhibition, and consider timing your visit to include lunch at one of the excellent restaurants in Faro's old town or nearby marina area.
