This is a four-hour cruise along the central Algarve coast, departing from Portimão and sailing east past Carvoeiro, Benagil, and the stretch of cliff-backed beaches that runs all the way to Praia da Marinha. The boat is a two-deck catamaran called Ophelia, with space for larger groups, a shaded lower deck, and an open upper deck where most passengers spend the outbound leg. The route hugs the coastline, passing rock arches, sea stacks, and the honey-coloured limestone cliffs that have made this stretch of coast one of the most photographed in Portugal.

The headline stop is Benagil Cave, the domed sea cave with a collapsed roof that lets in a shaft of sunlight and has become the Algarve's most iconic natural landmark. The catamaran does not enter the cave itself — it is too large, and the opening too narrow — but it anchors close enough for you to see the structure clearly from the water. If you want to go inside, you will need to take one of the smaller boat tours that can navigate the entrance, or swim or paddle in from the beach at low tide. What this trip offers instead is a broader coastal tour with Benagil as one highlight among several, rather than a cave-focused excursion.

Once the boat has cruised past the main sights, it anchors in a sheltered bay and the crew bring out paddleboards and inflatables. This is the activity portion of the trip, and it is entirely optional — you can stay on deck with a drink if you prefer. The water is calm in the lee of the cliffs, and the paddleboards are stable enough for beginners. The bay is usually somewhere between Benagil and Carvoeiro, chosen for shelter and depth, and you have around an hour to swim, paddle, or simply float before the boat heads back to Portimão.

Lunch is served on board during the return leg. It is a light meal — typically a selection of sandwiches, salads, and fruit — rather than a sit-down affair, and the open bar runs throughout the trip. Expect wine, beer, soft drinks, and water, all included in the ticket price. The bar is self-service, and the crew are relaxed about refills. The atmosphere is sociable and informal, and the trip attracts a mix of families, couples, and groups of friends. It is not a party boat, but neither is it a quiet wildlife cruise — expect music, conversation, and a fair amount of activity on deck.

This works well as a half-day outing if you want to see the coast without committing to a full-day excursion or a more physically demanding activity like kayaking. It suits families with children old enough to enjoy the water activities, couples looking for a relaxed day on the water, and anyone who wants to tick off Benagil and the surrounding coastline without the logistics of driving to multiple beaches. It is less suitable for anyone hoping for a close-up cave experience, or for those who prefer smaller boats and quieter outings — the catamaran is spacious and stable, but it is also a shared experience with dozens of other passengers.

Departure is from Portimão marina, which is well signposted and has ample parking. Arrive fifteen minutes early to check in and board. Bring sun cream, a hat, a towel, and swimwear if you plan to get in the water. A waterproof bag for your phone is a good idea if you are taking it on a paddleboard. The trip runs year-round, but the swimming portion is more appealing in summer when the water is warm. In spring and autumn, the coastal scenery is just as striking, but you may prefer to stay on deck rather than paddling in cooler water.
