About This Experience

Explore the stunning coastline of Algarve on a kayak tour that takes you directly to the iconic Benagil Cave, Monster Cabe, Pirate cave, Crocodile cave, Secret Lovers Beach, Elefant Bay and the...

The kayak route from Praia da Marinha to Benagil Cave and back takes in some of the most dramatic coastal scenery in the Algarve. This guided tour covers the highlights—Benagil itself, several smaller caves with nicknames like Monster Cave and Pirate Cave, and stretches of cliff and hidden beach that are only accessible from the water. It lasts around two hours and is pitched at a level that most people can manage, though you should be comfortable in a kayak and happy to get wet.

You meet at Praia da Marinha, one of the most photographed beaches in Portugal, where the guide runs through the basics of sea kayaking and what to expect. If you have kayaked before, the briefing is quick. If you have not, the guide will spend a bit more time making sure you are comfortable with the paddle and the boat. The water here is usually calm in the mornings and early afternoons, though there is always some swell, and the first part of the route is spent getting into a rhythm and adjusting to the conditions.

The coastline is a series of bays and headlands, with caves punched into the cliffs at irregular intervals. Some are wide and open, others narrow and dark. The guide leads you into each one, pointing out features in the rock and explaining how they were formed. The names—Monster Cave, Crocodile Cave, Pirate Cave—are informal and descriptive, and while they are not official designations, they help you keep track of where you have been. The guide will also point out Elephant Bay, a sheltered inlet where the rock formation resembles an elephant drinking, and Secret Lovers Beach, a small cove that is only accessible by water.

Benagil is the centrepiece of the tour, and you approach it from the sea, paddling through the low archway into the domed chamber beyond. The guide will give you time to take photos and rest before heading back out. In summer the cave can be crowded with other kayakers and boats, so the experience is less serene than you might hope, but it is still striking. The guide knows the best times to visit and will do their best to avoid the worst of the crowds.

After Benagil the route continues to Marinha Beach, where you can stop for a rest or a swim before heading back. The return leg is usually quicker, and by this point you will have found your rhythm and be more comfortable in the kayak. The guide keeps the group together and adjusts the pace to suit the slowest paddler, so no one is left behind.

This is a good option if you want to see Benagil and the surrounding coast from the water without the expense of a private boat tour. The kayak gives you a closer, more intimate perspective, and the effort of paddling makes the experience more rewarding. That said, it is not a lazy outing. You will be on the water for most of two hours, and while the pace is gentle, you should be reasonably fit and comfortable in the sea. Families with older children usually manage fine, though younger ones may struggle with the distance.

Praia da Marinha is accessible by car, with a car park at the top of the cliff and a long staircase down to the beach. In summer the car park fills early, so arrive with time to spare. The tour runs year-round, though winter departures are fewer and depend on the weather. Bring sun protection, water, and a dry bag for anything you do not want soaked. You will get wet, so dress accordingly, and be prepared for some spray if the swell is up.

If you are comfortable in a kayak and want to see the Algarve's most famous stretch of coast from the water, this is a solid, affordable option. The route is well planned, the guide is experienced, and the scenery is as good as it gets.
