The Castro Marim Medieval Festival transforms a frontier castle and its companion fort into a five-day medieval encampment each August, and it does so with a commitment that puts most heritage events to shame. The castle sits above the salt marshes and the Guadiana estuary, marking the border with Spain, and for this week it becomes a working medieval market, complete with jousting, falconry displays, equestrian shows and several hundred people in period dress who appear to be taking the whole thing seriously.

The setting is the real asset here. Castro Marim is a small border town that sees little tourist traffic outside this week, and the castle itself occupies high ground with views across the salt pans and the river into Andalucía. At dusk, when the heat drops and the torches are lit, the site becomes genuinely atmospheric in a way that larger, more commercial medieval fairs rarely manage. The Forte de São Sebastião, a star-shaped artillery fort below the castle, hosts overflow stalls and demonstrations, and the two sites are linked by a short walk through the old town.

This is often compared to the Silves Medieval Fair earlier in August, and while Silves is larger and more polished, Castro Marim has the advantage of scale and setting. It is compact enough to cover in an evening, the crowds are manageable, and the castle backdrop is difficult to beat. The market stalls run the usual spectrum — leatherwork, metalwork, pottery, honey, preserved fruit — but the quality is generally high and the vendors are used to explaining their craft rather than just shifting stock.

Go after sunset. The site is almost entirely exposed, and late August afternoons on the eastern Algarve are punishing. The atmosphere improves once the light softens and the temperature drops, and the evening programme — music, fire displays, the occasional staged sword fight — is when the event earns its reputation. Cobbles and slopes run throughout both sites, so buggies and wheelchairs will struggle, and there is almost no shade anywhere.

Entry is ticketed, though prices are modest by festival standards. Costume hire is usually available on site if you or your children want to join in, and a surprising number of visitors do. The event draws families during the day and a slightly older crowd in the evenings, when the taverns inside the castle walls start serving grilled meat and wine in clay cups.

Castro Marim sits five minutes from the A22 Guadiana bridge exit, which makes it an easy addition to a day spent exploring the eastern Algarve. The town itself has limited accommodation, so most visitors base themselves in Tavira or Monte Gordo and drive over for the evening. Parking near the castle fills early, but overflow parking is well signposted and the walk is short. If you are spending time in the east during late August, this is worth an evening of anyone's week.
