Lagos is a surf town in winter and a tourist town in summer, and the crowd at this screening tends to reflect both sides of that. Expect a mix of surfers, ocean-minded locals, and visitors who have spotted the event and want something other than a restaurant or a bar. The atmosphere is relaxed and the cinema is small enough that it feels like a community event rather than a commercial screening.

The marina car parks fill up in the evening, so arriving early or walking from elsewhere in town is the easier option. The cinema itself is straightforward — no assigned seating, no frills, just a good screen and decent sound in a room that knows what it is doing.

The interval is long enough to get a drink or step outside for air, and the cinema has a small bar that does the basics. The second half of the programme tends to be stronger than the first, which is either good programming or luck, but either way it means the evening builds rather than fading.

If you are in Lagos in early October and the subject matter interests you, this is worth the evening. The films are well-chosen, the cinema is a good venue, and the crowd is generally engaged enough that the experience feels communal rather than passive. If you are ambivalent about ocean documentaries or surf culture, it is less essential, but the quality of the filmmaking is high enough that it works even if the subject is not your primary interest.
