About This Event
Three-night Lloyd Webber and Rice musical in Portuguese at Teatro das Figuras (20–22 August 2026).
Quick answers
When is it?
You can catch it from August 20 to 22, 2026.
Where is it?
It takes place at Teatro das Figuras in Faro.
Teatro das Figuras is Faro's main performing arts venue, a modern building on the edge of the old town with a proper auditorium, good acoustics, and a summer programme that leans into musicals, dance and touring theatre. From 20 to 22 August it stages Evita, the Lloyd Webber and Rice musical about Eva Perón, performed in Portuguese by a strong regional cast. This is one of the more ambitious productions in the Algarve's summer calendar, and it is a rare chance to see musical theatre performed at a professional level outside Lisbon or Porto.
The show is sung in Portuguese, which will matter to some audiences and not to others. If you know the musical already — and many people do, from school productions or the film — the plot and the songs are familiar enough that the language shift is not disorienting. If you are coming to it fresh, the story is clear enough in gesture and staging that you will follow the arc even if you miss the detail. The music is the music, and "Don't Cry for Me Argentina" works in any language.
The cast is drawn largely from the Algarve's theatre and music schools, supplemented by a few professionals from the Lisbon circuit. The standard is high. Portuguese musical theatre has a serious training infrastructure, and the performers here are technically accomplished — strong voices, confident movement, and enough stage presence to fill the room. The production values are good without being lavish: period costumes, a flexible set, a live band in the pit. It is not the West End, but it is not trying to be.
The show runs across three nights, which means ticket availability and pricing vary. Weekend performances tend to sell faster and cost slightly more than the Thursday opening. If you have flexibility, the midweek slot is often the better value and the quieter house. Seating is allocated, so book early if you want to be close to the stage.
The runtime is just over two hours with an interval, which gives you time to stretch, buy a drink, and eavesdrop on the Portuguese families discussing the first act in the foyer. The interval is part of the experience — Teatro das Figuras is a social venue as much as a cultural one, and the crowd treats it as an evening out rather than just a show.
The theatre is a ten-minute walk from the cidade velha, Faro's old town, which makes it easy to pair the performance with dinner beforehand. Eat early — restaurants near the theatre fill up on show nights, and you do not want to be rushing your meal. Dress is smart-casual; you will see everything from linen shirts to summer dresses, but nobody is in beachwear.
This is suitable for older children and teenagers, particularly if they have any interest in theatre or music. The politics of the story — Peronism, populism, the cult of personality — will go over younger heads, but the spectacle and the songs carry the evening. Younger children will struggle with the length and the language, so this is better pitched at ages ten and up.
If you are spending August in Faro and want a proper evening out — something that feels like an event rather than just another dinner by the marina — this is a good reason to book a night at the theatre.
