About This Event

Pintura de Pepe Gámez. Recomenda-se a confirmação prévia, junto da Biblioteca Municipal ou do Posto de Turismo, de que o espaço se encontra aberto ao público.

The far northeastern corner of the Algarve, where the Guadiana River marks the border with Spain, is home to an exhibition of paintings by Pepe Gámez that runs from late May through the end of the year. The title, "A Look Through the Garden," hints at a focus on landscape and the natural world, though the precise subject matter and style will only become clear when you stand in front of the canvases.

Alcoutim is one of the region's most remote settlements, a small riverside town that feels a world away from the beach resorts an hour to the south. The exhibition takes place in the municipal library, a community space that doubles as a cultural venue in a place where resources are limited but the commitment to keeping culture alive remains strong. This is not a polished commercial gallery but a local initiative, and your visit will be shaped by that modest, genuine context.

Gámez is a Spanish artist, and the choice of Alcoutim as a venue makes sense given the town's position as a frontier crossing. The river here is narrow, the Spanish town of Sanlúcar de Guadiana visible on the opposite bank, and the sense of shared landscape and history is palpable. An exhibition of Spanish painting in a Portuguese library feels like a natural expression of that cross-border connection.

Because Alcoutim is so small and receives relatively few visitors, especially outside the peak summer months, opening hours can be unpredictable. The listing specifically recommends confirming in advance with the library or the tourist office that the space will be open on the day you plan to visit. This is practical advice worth heeding—it's a long drive to arrive and find the door locked.

The journey to Alcoutim is part of the experience. The road follows the river north through a landscape of cork oak and scrub, with little traffic and a sense of moving deeper into the interior with every kilometre. This is the Algarve at its quietest and least developed, a counterpoint to the crowded beaches and golf courses that dominate the coast.

Once you're in Alcoutim, allow time to explore beyond the exhibition. The village has a small castle with views across the river, a handful of cafés, and a ferry that will take you to Spain if you have your passport. The pace is slow, the streets nearly empty, and the sense of being somewhere overlooked and unhurried is a large part of the appeal.

This exhibition will suit visitors who enjoy venturing off the main tourist routes and don't mind a bit of logistical uncertainty in exchange for a more authentic encounter with the region. It's not worth a special journey if art is only a passing interest, but if you're already planning to explore the Guadiana valley or the eastern interior, it's a worthwhile addition to the itinerary and a chance to see a corner of the Algarve that most visitors never reach.
