About This Event

Pintura de Pepe Gámez. Recomenda-se a confirmação prévia, junto da Biblioteca Municipal ou do Posto de Turismo, de que o espaço se encontra aberto ao público.

The municipal library in Alcoutim, a small town on the Guadiana River at the Spanish border, hosts paintings by Pepe Gámez throughout much of the year. The exhibition occupies a modest space in a town where cultural offerings are few, making it one of the rare reasons to linger in Alcoutim beyond the castle and the riverfront.

Gámez's work focuses on gardens and natural forms, a subject well-suited to this corner of the Algarve where the landscape shifts from coastal scrub to the greener, more cultivated terraces along the river valley. The paintings offer a Spanish artist's perspective on botanical subjects, with a palette and approach shaped by the light and vegetation common to both sides of the border. Standing in the library's exhibition space, you are only a few hundred metres from Spain itself, visible across the water.

Alcoutim is one of the Algarve's most remote settlements, a place that thrived when the river was a trade route and has since settled into a quiet existence. The town's population is small and ageing, its streets steep and often empty. The library and tourism office, mentioned in the exhibition notes, are essential stops for confirming that the space is open — irregular hours and limited staffing mean that not every day is reliable, particularly outside the summer months.

This is an exhibition for visitors already in Alcoutim or those making a deliberate trip to the border region. It is not a destination in itself, but it adds depth to a visit that might otherwise be limited to a quick look at the castle and a coffee by the river. The work suits anyone with an interest in painting or gardens, or simply those who enjoy the quiet pleasure of looking at art in an unexpected place.

Reaching Alcoutim requires commitment. The town sits at the end of a winding road that climbs inland from the main coastal routes, a drive of an hour or more from Tavira or Castro Marim. There is no train service, and buses are infrequent. Most visitors arrive by car, often as part of a broader loop through the interior or a river trip from Vila Real de Santo António.

The exhibition runs from late May through the end of the year, a long window that suggests the work is more or less permanent during that period. Entry is free or very low-cost, typical for small municipal galleries in the interior. The library itself is a modest building, functional rather than architecturally notable, but it represents the kind of cultural infrastructure that keeps small towns connected to wider artistic conversations.

For those who value the experience of finding art in unlikely places, or who are drawn to the Algarve's quieter, less-visited corners, the Gámez exhibition offers a reason to make the journey to Alcoutim. It is a small thing, but in a town this size, small things matter. Just remember to confirm opening hours before you drive all the way up.
