São Brás de Alportel hosts a monthly swap meet on the third Sunday of every month, running throughout the year. It's a straightforward community exchange where you bring items you no longer need and take home things that catch your eye, all without money changing hands.

The format is simple: participants can bring up to twelve items from a defined list that includes adult clothing and shoes, children's clothing, toys, books, bags and costume jewellery. The limit keeps things manageable and ensures a reasonably curated selection rather than a free-for-all jumble. You're not obliged to take twelve things if you bring twelve, nor to bring the maximum if you only have a few pieces worth passing on.

This kind of event works best if you arrive with realistic expectations. The quality and range of what's available will vary month to month depending on who turns up, so it's not a substitute for proper shopping if you need something specific. But if you enjoy the hunt and don't mind leaving empty-handed some days, it can be a pleasant way to spend a Sunday morning. Families with growing children often do particularly well, as kids' clothing and toys cycle through quickly.

São Brás de Alportel sits inland from Faro and Loulé, a market town known for its cork heritage and a pace of life several notches slower than the coast.
