FolkFaro has been running for over two decades, and it remains one of the more genuinely un-touristy things you can do in Faro in August. Groups from eight countries perform across a week, some in ticketed shows at Teatro das Figuras, but much of it spills into the squares and streets of the old town for free. The programme shifts nightly, so checking the Câmara de Faro agenda on the day is worth doing, but the basic format is consistent: traditional dance and music, costumes that take themselves seriously, and a crowd that is overwhelmingly Portuguese.

The opening gala on 16 August at Teatro das Figuras is the formal set-piece, a seated performance with a full programme and a ticket price to match. It is polished and well-rehearsed, and if you want the complete experience in one evening, that is the night to attend. But the street parades and square performances are the better experience if you would rather not commit to a seat. Turn up in the Cidade Velha — the old town — any evening during the week and you will find something: a group in full costume performing in Largo da Sé, a procession through the narrow streets, or an impromptu set in one of the smaller squares.

The participating countries change slightly each year, but the mix is usually a combination of European and South American groups, with Portugal represented by several regional folk ensembles. The performances are earnest rather than ironic, and the costumes and choreography are taken seriously. If your tolerance for folk music is low, this will test it. If you have any affection for the form, or if you are simply curious about what a Portuguese crowd turns out for in August, it is worth an evening.

Evenings run late, and the old town gets busy, especially on Friday and Saturday nights. Go on foot if you can. Parking in the Cidade Velha is difficult at the best of times, and during the festival it is close to impossible. If you are driving in, park outside the centre and walk — the old town is small enough that nowhere is more than ten minutes from anywhere else.

The street performances are free, which makes this a low-commitment way to spend an evening. The atmosphere is relaxed, the crowds are good-natured, and the performances are short enough that you can drift in and out without feeling like you are missing the main event. The squares fill up quickly once the music starts, so arrive early if you want a seat at one of the outdoor cafés with a view.

Faro in August is hot, and the old town holds the heat well into the evening, but the festival runs late enough that the temperature drops to something manageable by the time the main performances begin. The programme varies nightly, with different groups performing on different evenings, so if you are in Faro for several days, you can dip in and out without seeing the same act twice.

If you are basing yourself in Faro for the week, the festival pairs well with the eastern Algarve generally. The town empties out during the day — most visitors head to the beaches or the islands — and fills again after dark. The festival gives you a reason to stay in town for the evening, and the old town is at its best once the heat has passed and the lights come on. It is not a major cultural event, but it is a pleasant way to spend a few hours, and it offers a version of Faro that most visitors never see.
