From late February onwards, Portimão launches the new Mercadinho da Figueira, a regular local producers' market held in the space adjacent to the Figueira sports complex.
The inaugural edition celebrates the orange—fitting for a region where citrus groves perfume the countryside and the fruit appears in everything from breakfast juice to traditional sweets.
At the market stalls you'll find fresh fruit, local honey, traditional liqueurs, typical Algarve pastries, handmade crafts and much more, all produced locally and sold by the people who make or grow them. The atmosphere is friendly and authentic, with live accompaniment adding to the occasion.
The Figueira neighbourhood lies slightly inland from Portimão's centre, offering a glimpse of residential life away from the resort areas. It's an easy drive or bus ride from the main town or nearby Praia da Rocha.
This market suits food lovers, anyone interested in local produce and traditional crafts, and visitors who enjoy the genuine, unhurried pace of neighbourhood life. It's particularly good for families, with space for children to move about safely.
Bring cash for purchases, as not all stallholders will have card facilities. Arriving earlier in the session generally means the fullest selection, though the relaxed vibe lasts throughout.
Check locally for exact dates and times as the market establishes its regular schedule. The focus on seasonal produce means each edition will have a slightly different character as the year progresses.
