A new local market takes root in Portimão's Figueira neighbourhood, occupying the space beside the area's sports complex from late February onward. The Mercadinho da Figueira joins the Algarve's growing roster of artisan and producers' markets, offering a weekend alternative to supermarket shopping and a chance to meet the people who grow and make what they sell.

The first edition puts oranges at the centre, a fitting choice for late winter in the Algarve when citrus groves across the region are heavy with fruit. The timing catches the tail end of the harvest season, when the best varieties are still coming off the trees and local producers are eager to move stock before spring. Expect stalls piled with different orange types, from the sharp, thin-skinned varieties good for juice to the sweeter, easier-peeling kinds that make better eating.

Beyond the citrus focus, the market draws from the familiar roster of regional products: honey from hives kept in the hills behind the coast, traditional liqueurs distilled from medronho or fig, cakes and pastries made to old recipes, and handicrafts that range from the genuinely artisanal to the more tourist-oriented. The quality varies, as it does at any market, but the emphasis on local producers means you are more likely to find things with a story behind them than mass-produced goods.

This is a market for people who enjoy the ritual of weekend shopping, the slow browse through stalls, the conversations with stallholders, the accumulation of small purchases that add up to a morning well spent. It suits families looking for an outing that combines fresh air with the possibility of lunch ingredients, and visitors who want to taste and buy things they cannot find at home. It is less appealing if you are on a tight schedule or uninterested in food and craft.

Figueira sits on Portimão's eastern edge, a residential area that lacks the tourist density of Praia da Rocha but offers easier parking and a more local feel. The sports complex is straightforward to find if you are driving, with space for cars nearby. If you are staying in central Portimão, the walk is manageable but not quick — a taxi or local bus makes more sense.

The market runs regularly, though the exact frequency is not specified beyond the start date in late February. Most such markets in the Algarve operate weekly or fortnightly, typically on Saturday mornings when producers can leave their farms and workshops without disrupting the working week. Arriving early, while the best produce is still available and before the sun climbs too high, is generally the wisest approach.

What you will not find here is the scale or variety of Loulé's famous Saturday market or the polished presentation of some of the coast's more established artisan fairs. The Mercadinho da Figueira is newer, smaller, still finding its rhythm. For some visitors, that is precisely the appeal — a market that feels like it belongs to the neighbourhood rather than to the tourist calendar, where the transaction still involves a conversation and the chance to learn something about what you are buying.
