A rural village fair in the Barrocal hills: food, crafts, music and almost no tourists.

Tôr is a small village in the Barrocal, the limestone hill country inland from Loulé, and its annual fair is the sort of thing that has largely disappeared from the coast. Three days over the first weekend of September, built around local food, agricultural stalls, folk music and a crowd that is overwhelmingly Portuguese. It is not staged for visitors, which is precisely the appeal, but it also means little English is spoken, the signage is minimal, and you will need a car to get there.

The Barrocal is the band of rolling limestone hills between the coast and the mountains, a landscape of dry stone walls, olive groves, carob trees and scattered villages that see almost no tourist traffic. Tôr sits roughly 20 minutes inland from Loulé, and the fair takes over the village centre for the weekend, spilling into the church square and the surrounding streets. The stalls sell honey, presunto, cheese, dried figs, medronho, pottery, cork goods and the sort of agricultural equipment that only makes sense if you keep chickens or grow your own vegetables.

The food is the main draw. Grilled sardines, pork ribs, chouriço, roasted chestnuts in the evening, and wine sold by the jug from trestle tables. The quality is high, the prices are low, and the portions are generous. The music runs from late afternoon into the night, usually accordion-led folk groups and the occasional marching band, and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious in a way that coastal events rarely manage.

Go in the evening when it is cooler and the music starts. September afternoons in the Barrocal can still be warm, and the village has little shade. The fair is liveliest after sunset, when the temperature drops and the locals turn up in numbers. Bring cash — card readers are patchy at rural fairs, and several stalls operate on a cash-only basis.

There is no realistic public transport to Tôr, so driving is essential. The roads into the village are narrow and winding, and parking near the centre fills early, but overflow parking is usually signposted and the walk is short. The village itself is tiny, so once you have parked, everything is within a few minutes on foot.

This is not a polished tourist event. The signage is in Portuguese, the stall holders assume you speak the language, and the whole thing operates on the assumption that everyone knows what is going on. If you are comfortable with that, and if the idea of a rural village fair with almost no foreign visitors appeals, this is worth the drive. If you prefer your events clearly signposted and English-friendly, it will frustrate you.

The Barrocal generally is the part of the Algarve most visitors never reach, and it rewards a day of poking around. The landscape is quieter and greener than the coast, the villages are working communities rather than tourist stops, and the pace is slower. If the fair leaves you curious about the inland Algarve, Tôr is a reasonable starting point.
