About This Experience

Paddle through crystal-clear waters to the famous Benagil sea cave on a guided stand-up paddleboard tour.

Stand-up paddleboarding to the Benagil Cave offers a different perspective than kayaking the same route, higher on the water and more exposed to the swell, with the balance and rhythm of paddling from your feet rather than seated. The cave itself remains the destination, but the journey becomes more of a workout and the experience more weather-dependent. This is a longer outing than most kayak tours, with the extra time allowing for a more leisurely pace and the chance to explore further along the coast if conditions allow.

You will launch from one of the beaches near Benagil, most likely Benagil itself or Carvoeiro depending on the wind and swell direction. The guide will fit you with a board, paddle and safety equipment, then run through the basics of stance, stroke and turning before you push off into the shallows. If you have never stand-up paddled before, expect to spend the first ten minutes finding your balance and getting used to the feel of the board beneath you. The water is generally calm close to shore, but once you round the first headland the swell becomes more noticeable and you will need to adjust your stance and paddle more deliberately to stay upright.

The route follows the limestone cliffs east or west depending on your starting point, passing beneath arches and alongside smaller caves before reaching the Benagil Cave itself. The guide will time your approach with the swell, paddling you inside where the space opens up and the light from the oculus above turns the water a pale green. The sand inside is often occupied by kayakers and other paddleboarders, so the experience is more about the brief immersion in that strange interior light than any extended time ashore. You will spend a few minutes inside before the guide moves you on to make way for others.

The tour is longer than most kayak trips, giving you more time on the water and the option to explore additional caves and beaches along the way. The guide will adjust the route depending on your fitness and the conditions, and may stop at a quieter cove for a rest or a swim if the group is up for it. The extra time also means you are more likely to encounter changing conditions, so be prepared for wind, swell or sun depending on the season and time of day.

Stand-up paddleboarding requires more core strength and balance than kayaking, and you will be working harder to stay upright and make progress, particularly if there is any chop. If you are not confident on a board, a kayak tour is a safer and less tiring option. If you have paddled before and want a more active experience, the SUP tour offers that, along with the satisfaction of navigating the coast under your own power.

The tour is best suited to adults and older teens with reasonable fitness and some prior experience on a paddleboard, though beginners are welcome if they are comfortable in the water and willing to put in the effort. The session includes a professional guide, board and paddle, safety equipment, and photos of the trip. After the paddle you can rinse off and explore the clifftop walks that run along this stretch of coast, offering views down into the caves from above.
