If you have ever wondered what it feels like to swim into a sea cave rather than peer at it from a boat, this one-hour guided swim offers exactly that. You enter the water from a beach near Portimão and follow a qualified guide along the base of the cliffs, weaving through arches, ducking into grottoes and reaching pockets of sand that have no land access. It is swimming as exploration, and it suits anyone comfortable in open water who wants to see the coast from a perspective most visitors never reach.

The cliffs here are tall and sculpted, honeycombed with caves and undercuts. Swimming alongside them gives you a sense of scale that no boat tour can match — you feel the swell, hear the echo inside the caves, and notice details like fossilised shells in the rock face. The guide keeps the group together and adjusts the pace to suit the slowest swimmer, so fitness matters less than confidence in the sea.

You do not need to be a strong swimmer, but you should be at ease in water over your head and able to manage light chop. Wetsuits are provided, which help with buoyancy as well as warmth, and the guide carries a tow float for safety. The route covers roughly a kilometre, with plenty of stops to rest, look around and take in the surroundings. If you are nervous, this is not the outing to push through that nervousness; if you love swimming and want to do it somewhere beautiful, it is hard to beat.

The standard route stays within a sheltered stretch of coast, but for an additional fee you can extend the swim to include the more dramatic caves and arches further along. That version takes longer and ventures into slightly more exposed water, so it is worth discussing with the operator if you are unsure which suits you.

The experience is also available at other locations along the coast, from Sagres in the west to Faro in the east, with pricing adjusted depending on where you start. Each stretch of coastline has its own character — Sagres is wilder and more Atlantic-facing, while the central Algarve offers the most sheltered conditions and the highest concentration of caves.

Timing matters. Early morning is usually calmest, and the light inside the caves is best before midday. Summer brings warmer water but also more boat traffic; spring and autumn offer solitude and clearer visibility. Free cancellation is included, which is useful given that sea conditions can shift quickly. Bring a towel, sunscreen and water, and expect to spend the rest of the day feeling pleasantly tired.
