Explore Secret Caves and Beaches of Alvor - Boat & Kayak Tour

About This Experience

Discover the hidden wonders of the Algarve on our boat and kayak tour! Explore secluded beaches, uncover secret caves, and immerse yourself in untouched nature between Alvor and Praia do Vau. Our...

The coastline between Alvor and Praia do Vau is one of the Algarve's quieter stretches, a world away from the crowded clifftop viewpoints further east. This three-hour outing combines a boat ride aboard a vintage wooden vessel with kayaking into sea caves and coves that most visitors never see, making it a good choice for anyone who wants a more hands-on coastal experience without the usual tour-boat throngs.

You meet at Alvor, where the tour departs aboard Frontino, a handcrafted boat built in 1957. The vessel is roomy and stable, with a bar, music, snacks and a toilet on board, so the journey out is comfortable rather than cramped. The skippers know the coast well and share stories about the area as you cruise, setting the tone for a relaxed, informal outing rather than a scripted commentary.

Once you reach the kayaking zone, you swap the boat for a kayak and paddle into sea caves and along the base of the cliffs. The caves here are smaller and less famous than Benagil, which means you are more likely to have them to yourselves. The kayaking is not difficult, but you do need to be comfortable getting in and out of a kayak from the water and paddling for a reasonable stretch. If you have never kayaked before, the guides will give you a quick briefing, but this is not a beginner lesson—it assumes a basic level of confidence on the water.

The route takes in secluded beaches that are unreachable by land, some with narrow openings framed by rock walls, others backed by low dunes and scrub. The water is usually calm in this area, especially in summer, and towards the end of the tour there is a swimming stop where you can jump in and cool off. The clarity of the water makes it a pleasant place to float, though the depth varies depending on where you stop.

This tour suits people who want a bit more activity than a standard boat cruise but are not looking for a full-on kayaking expedition. It is not ideal for very young children or anyone with limited mobility, as you need to be able to move between the boat and the kayak and spend a fair amount of time paddling. The three-hour duration is long enough to feel like a proper outing but short enough to fit into a half-day, leaving the rest of your day free for the beach or exploring Alvor itself.

Alvor is easy to reach by car, with parking near the marina, and is also well connected by bus from Portimão and Lagos. The tour runs year-round, though sea conditions in winter can be less predictable, so summer and early autumn are the most reliable seasons. Bring sun protection, a towel, and a waterproof bag for anything you want to keep dry while kayaking.
