Kayak & Stand Up Paddle in Ferragudo | SELF-GUIDED

About This Experience
This experience gives you the freedom to explore Ferragudo from the water, without joining a guided group.
Ferragudo is one of the Algarve's quieter coastal villages, and exploring it from the water gives you a perspective that most visitors miss. This self-guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard rental lets you set your own pace and route, with no guide or group to follow. You are free to spend the time however you like, whether that means a gentle paddle along the riverbank or a more adventurous push out toward the open sea.
The route begins on the Arade River, which is calm and sheltered, making it accessible even if you are new to kayaking or SUP. From the water, you can see the village of Ferragudo rising up the hillside, the old fort of São João do Arade guarding the river mouth, and the long curve of Praia Grande stretching toward Portimão. There are quiet river beaches along the way where you can pull in and rest, and the current is gentle enough that you do not need to fight it.
If the sea is calm, you can continue past the river mouth and explore the coastline beyond. Pintadinho Beach, the Ponta do Altar Lighthouse and a sea cave with clear, turquoise water are all within reach, though the conditions need to be right — the Atlantic can be unpredictable, and the operator will advise on the day whether it is safe to head out to sea.
Before you set off, the team at the shop will brief you on the route, safety rules and local tips. They will also provide a drybag for your belongings and a life jacket if you want one. The rental period is generous, giving you plenty of time to explore without feeling rushed. If you are unsure about your ability, the staff can recommend a shorter or easier route, and they are used to dealing with beginners.
This is a private experience, so you can go solo or bring your own group, and the freedom to stop, linger or change direction is part of the appeal. It suits confident swimmers who are comfortable on the water and happy to navigate without a guide. If you prefer structure or want commentary on what you are seeing, a guided tour would be a better choice.
Ferragudo is easy to reach by car, and there is parking near the shop. The village itself is worth exploring on foot before or after your paddle, with narrow streets, whitewashed houses and a handful of good seafood restaurants. Free cancellation applies, which is helpful given that sea conditions can change quickly and make the trip less enjoyable or even unsafe. This is a straightforward, well-priced way to see Ferragudo from the water, and the flexibility it offers is rare among Algarve water sports.
