About This Experience

This is a day of discovery and history! Our route follows lesser travelled paths, giving you a discerning view of Portugal’s past and present.

This is a full-day tour that takes you away from the beaches and into the Algarve's quieter, more historical interior. It is a long day — seven hours — but it covers a lot of ground and gives you a sense of the region's layers: Moorish castles, mountain villages, thermal springs, and the wild Atlantic coast at the far western edge.

The tour starts with a visit to Silves, the old Moorish capital of the Algarve. The red sandstone castle dominates the town, and there is time to wander the narrow streets, visit the cathedral, and get a feel for a place that was once one of the most important cities in southern Iberia. The castle itself is impressive, and the views from the ramparts stretch across the orange groves and low hills of the Algarve interior.

From Silves, the route climbs into the Serra de Monchique, a range of volcanic hills that rise sharply from the coastal plain. The first stop is Caldas de Monchique, a small spa village built around natural hot springs that have been used since Roman times. The village is charming in a slightly faded way, with old tile-fronted buildings and a shaded square where you can try the spring water, which is said to have medicinal properties. The taste is mineral-heavy and not for everyone, but the setting is lovely.

The road continues upward to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve at just over nine hundred metres. On a clear day, the views are vast — the coast stretching east and west, the hills rolling away to the north. There is a car park and a few souvenir stalls at the summit, and the air is noticeably cooler than down on the coast. It is a good spot for photos and a reminder of how different the Algarve is when you leave the beaches behind.

After Fóia, the tour descends through the countryside to the village of Marmelete, where lunch is served in a local restaurant. The meal is included in the price, and it is traditional Algarve fare — grilled meats, fresh bread, local wine. The village itself is small and unhurried, the kind of place where the pace of life is dictated by the seasons rather than the tourist calendar.

The afternoon is spent on the west coast, visiting some of the wild beaches of the Costa Vicentina and ending at Cape St. Vincent, the southwestern tip of Europe. The cape is dramatic — sheer cliffs, a working lighthouse, and the Atlantic stretching away to the horizon. The wind is usually strong, and the sense of being at the edge of something is palpable. The tour also passes through Sagres, a small fishing town with a sheltered harbour and a history tied to Portugal's age of exploration.

This is a tour that suits people who want to see more of the Algarve than just the beaches. It is a long day, and there is a fair amount of driving, but the variety is the point. You see mountains, villages, coastline, and history, and you get a sense of the region's depth. The tour is well reviewed, and the guides are knowledgeable and personable. At ninety-nine euros, it is not cheap, but the price includes lunch and covers a lot of ground.
