Skydiving in the Algarve means jumping out of a small aircraft at ten thousand feet and freefalling for half a minute over one of the most photogenic stretches of coastline in Europe. The experience is pure adrenaline, but it is also surprisingly straightforward — you do not need any prior experience, and the entire process from arrival to landing takes around two hours. You are strapped to an experienced instructor who controls the parachute and handles the technical side, so your job is simply to enjoy the fall and try to remember to breathe.

The briefing lasts about ten minutes and covers the basics: how to position your body during freefall, when to expect the parachute to open, and how to land safely. It is not a lengthy training session because you are not doing the flying — the instructor is. Once you are geared up and strapped in, you board a purpose-built skydiving aircraft and climb steadily to altitude. The ascent takes around fifteen minutes, and the views through the open door are spectacular: the Algarve's golden cliffs, the patchwork of fields and forests inland, and the Atlantic stretching out to the horizon.

At ten thousand feet, the door opens and the first jumpers shuffle forward and disappear. When it is your turn, you and your instructor move to the edge, and then you are out, tumbling into the sky. The freefall lasts around thirty seconds and reaches speeds of up to two hundred kilometres per hour. The noise is overwhelming, the wind batters your face, and the ground rushes up at an alarming rate. Then the parachute deploys, the noise stops, and you are floating in near silence, drifting gently back towards the airfield.

The parachute descent takes several minutes and gives you time to recover from the shock of the freefall and actually look around. The views are extraordinary — the entire coastline is visible, from the beaches and resort towns to the mountains inland. The instructor may let you steer the parachute if you ask, though most people are content to hang on and enjoy the ride. The landing is on a grassy field next to the airfield, and if you have followed the instructor's guidance on body positioning, it is gentle and uneventful.

This is not an activity for anyone with a serious fear of heights or a heart condition, and you will be asked to confirm your fitness before jumping. The weight limit is strictly enforced, and weather conditions can delay or cancel jumps at short notice. Free cancellation is available, which is essential given how dependent the experience is on clear skies and light winds. The operation runs year-round, but the best conditions are typically in spring and autumn when the weather is stable and the visibility is excellent.
