About This Experience

Join an intimate wine tour of two local vineyards/farms and their cellars, guided by a wine expert and learn about all the process of winemaking, from the vineyard to the bootle. Enjoy tasting three...

The Algarve is better known for beaches than vineyards, but the rolling hills inland have been producing wine for centuries, and a handful of estates now welcome visitors for tastings and cellar tours. This full-day experience combines two vineyard visits with a meal at a mountain-top restaurant, offering a side of the region that most coastal visitors never see.

You begin with a guided tour of two working wine properties, each with its own character and approach to winemaking. A wine expert walks you through the vineyards, explaining how the soils, climate and grape varieties shape the final product. In the cellars, you learn about fermentation, ageing and bottling, then settle in for a tasting of three wines at each estate. The focus is on understanding flavour profiles and tasting technique, so even if you are new to wine, you will come away with a better sense of what you are drinking and why.

The estates themselves are worth the visit for the setting alone. Many occupy old farmhouses or quintas with views over olive groves and almond orchards, and the pace is unhurried — this is not a whistle-stop tour. Between the two vineyards, you will have tasted six different wines and spent several hours in the countryside, well away from the coastal bustle.

The second half of the day takes you up to Fóia, the highest point in the Algarve, where a traditional restaurant serves lunch or dinner depending on your booking. The menu features Portuguese classics, and the dining room looks out over the hills and, on clear days, the distant coastline. If you time it for dinner, you will catch the sunset from the terrace, which is one of the best vantage points in the region.

This is a small-group experience, and the high ratings from more than a hundred reviews reflect the quality of both the guiding and the access to the estates. It suits anyone with an interest in wine or rural Portugal, though it is a long day and involves a fair amount of driving on winding roads. If you are prone to motion sickness, sit in the front.

The tour includes transport, all tastings and the meal, so once you are picked up, everything is taken care of. Wear comfortable shoes for walking around the vineyards, and pace yourself with the wine — six tastings plus a meal is more generous than it sounds. Free cancellation applies, which is helpful if the weather turns or plans change.

Located on the north border area of Portimão and Alvor. With the big mountain of Monchique, that dominates the view when we are at the vineyards, this large property has also growing areas of cork trees, wheat fields and orange trees. In the family since 1865 and producers of grapes from a long time, this farm built their modern winery in 1999 and were the first producing certified designation of origin wines in the Algarve. In the esplanade, at the shop or at the oak barrels is visible the tradition of this family estate.

Owned by a portuguese-french couple that met at Bordeaux, where he was born and grew up surroundend by the influence of wine. They moved in the region at the beginning of the century to start this project from zero. In the slopes of Odelouca River Vlley, they planted their vineyard and built their small but well equiped winery, that also hosts a tasting room, barrels room and laboratory.
