Few stretches of European coastline can match the central Algarve for sheer sculptural drama, and this two-hour boat trip is designed to show you why. The headline attraction is the Benagil cave, a vast sea-carved chamber with a collapsed dome that has become one of the most photographed natural landmarks in Portugal. But the trip also takes in a procession of other caves, arches, and hidden beaches that make this section of coast so visually arresting.

You'll travel by boat along a route that hugs the cliffs, slipping into openings that would be invisible from the land and pausing inside caverns where the light filters through cracks in the rock. The geology here is limestone, soft and honey-coloured, and the Atlantic has spent thousands of years carving it into tunnels, grottoes, and freestanding pillars. The water is startlingly clear, and on a calm day you can see down to the rippled sand and scattered rocks on the seabed.

The cave is large enough to hold several boats at once, though that's not always a blessing — during peak season it can feel crowded, and the magic is diluted somewhat when you're jostling for space with half a dozen other groups. The trip includes a swimming stop, which is optional but recommended if the sea is calm and the sun is out. The water temperature is refreshing rather than warm, even in summer, and there's something memorable about swimming in the shadow of these cliffs with the open Atlantic stretching out behind you. If you'd rather stay dry, that's fine too — the boat is stable enough to relax on board while others take a dip. Water and light snacks are provided, which is a thoughtful addition on a warm day.

The boats used for these trips are typically rigid inflatables or similar craft, which sit low in the water and can bounce around if there's any swell. If you're sensitive to motion, take precautions before you board and sit in the middle where the ride is smoothest.
