Praia da Rocha is one of the Algarve's most accessible surf beaches, with consistent swell, a long stretch of sand and enough space that beginners are not in anyone's way. This private lesson is aimed at individuals, couples or small family groups who want focused instruction rather than a crowded group session, and the format is straightforward: a warm-up, a safety and technique briefing, practice on the sand, and then time in the water with an instructor watching and correcting.

The lesson is customised to your level, which in practice means the instructor adjusts the pace and the detail of the instruction based on what you already know. If you have never surfed before, expect to spend more time on the basics — how to paddle, how to pop up, how to read the whitewater. If you have surfed a few times and can stand up reliably, the focus will shift to positioning, timing and riding the face of the wave rather than just the foam. The instructor-to-student ratio is capped, so even if you book as a group, you will get individual attention.

The session is ninety minutes from start to finish, and the time in the water is a subset of that — perhaps forty-five to sixty minutes, depending on conditions and how quickly you pick things up. The rest is spent on the beach learning the mechanics, watching the waves and catching your breath. Ninety minutes is long enough to feel like you have learned something but short enough that you will not be exhausted, and for most beginners it is the right duration.

All equipment is included: wetsuit, board and leash. The boards are foam-topped learner models, stable and forgiving, and the wetsuits are full-length, which you will appreciate even in May when the Atlantic is cooler than it looks. The instructors are experienced and certified, and the school operates year-round, so they know the beach, the tides and the best spots to take beginners depending on the day's conditions.

Praia da Rocha in May is warm on land but the water is still brisk — expect something in the mid-to-high teens Celsius — and the beach is not yet crowded. The surf is generally manageable for learners, though the Algarve's south coast is more sheltered than the west, so the waves are smaller and less powerful. If you are looking for serious surf, this is not the coast for it, but if you are looking to learn in forgiving conditions, it is ideal.

Praia da Rocha is definitely the best beach to start surfing. It's a long white sand beach break, perfect for the first lessons for all - kids and adults. It's very safe and fun!

The lesson is suitable for anyone from six years old upwards, provided they are comfortable in the water and able to follow instructions. It is not suitable for anyone with significant mobility limitations or anyone who cannot swim. If you are booking for children, be realistic about their attention span and their tolerance for cold water — ninety minutes is a long time for a restless seven-year-old, and the instructor cannot force enthusiasm.

The meeting point is on Praia da Rocha itself, near one of the main beach access points. Parking is available but can be tight in the afternoon, so aim to arrive early. If you are staying in Portimão, the beach is a short walk or a quick bus ride from the centre. Bring a towel, a change of clothes and something warm to put on afterwards — the wetsuit will keep you warm in the water, but you will feel the chill once you are out.

This is a private lesson, so the scheduling is more flexible than a group class, but it is still subject to weather and tide. The school will contact you if conditions are unsafe and offer a reschedule or a refund. If you are serious about learning to surf, one lesson will not make you competent, but it will give you the basics and a sense of whether this is something you want to pursue. If you just want to try it once and tick the box, ninety minutes is enough to say you did.
