Explore the Algarve by E-Mountain Bike with SW Trails
Aljezur sits in the northwestern corner of the Algarve, where the coast is wilder and the interior still green with cork oak and pine. The castle that crowns the old town is a modest ruin, a Moorish fortification rebuilt in the thirteenth century and now reduced to a circuit of walls and a single tower. The views from the top take in the valley, the white houses of the old quarter, and the hills rolling west toward the Atlantic. This two-hour e-mountain bike tour takes you there from the valley floor, climbing through back lanes and dirt tracks that would be hard work on a standard bike but are manageable on an e-MTB.
You meet your guide in Aljezur, where the route is tailored to your fitness and experience. The electric assist means the climbs are less punishing, but you are still riding—pedalling, steering, feeling the terrain—rather than simply motoring uphill. The trails mix tarmac, gravel, and singletrack, winding through farmland, past old stone walls, and under the shade of eucalyptus and cork. The guide sets the pace and points out details you would miss on your own: the geology of the valley, the history of the cork harvest, the way the light changes as you gain height.
The castle itself is open and free to explore. You can lock the bikes and walk the ramparts, climb the tower, and look out over the valley and the Serra de Monchique beyond. The stonework is weathered and the interior mostly gone, but the setting is striking and the sense of history tangible. Aljezur was a frontier town for centuries, caught between Christian and Moorish rule, and the castle's position makes clear why it mattered.
The ride down is faster and looser, with the option to take a different route if you want more technical trail or simply a gentler descent. The e-bike takes the sting out of the climbs but does not flatten the experience—you still need to handle the bike, read the trail, and stay alert on the descents. If you are new to mountain biking, the guide will keep things manageable. If you have experience and want more challenge, there are steeper lines and rougher trails nearby.
E-bike, helmet, and water are provided. Wear layers and bring sun protection—Aljezur can be warm even in spring and autumn, but the coast is often breezy. The tour is led by SW Trails, a local outfit that knows the terrain and can adapt routes to suit your group. Aljezur is about an hour's drive from Lagos or Portimão, and the town itself is worth lingering in after the ride—there are cafés in the old quarter and a good market on Wednesdays. This is the Algarve away from the resorts, quieter and rougher-edged, and the bike is a good way to see it.
