About This Place
Moorish hilltop castle town on the Costa Vicentina. Gateway to wild west coast surf beaches like Arrifana, Bordeira, and Odeceixe for surfers and slow travellers.
Aljezur is a small, artistic town on the Costa Vicentina, Portugal's wildest and most unspoiled coastline. Perched on a hillside above the Arade River valley, it's known for a thriving local arts scene, rugged cliffs, powerful Atlantic swells, and a laid-back bohemian vibe. The town feels more like a working artist community than a tourist resort.
The Town
Aljezur's old town sits on the hillside; the newer part spreads toward the river. The castle ruins (dating to the 16th century, rebuilt after a pirate raid) still stand at the top of town and offer good views. The town has become something of a haven for painters, sculptors, and musicians who are drawn by the light, the landscape, and the relaxed atmosphere.
Beaches & Water
Praia da Arrifana is a famous, powerful beach break known for good waves and a dramatic setting beneath high cliffs. Nearby Praia do Vale de Telha is calmer and better for families. Both are stunning, with consistent swells in autumn and winter.
The coast here is dramatic: dark cliffs, golden sand, and the sense of being on the edge of something wild. Swimming can be rough; currents are strong.
Inland
The countryside around Aljezur is green and rolling, with cork forests and small traditional villages. Hiking is excellent, especially west toward Carrapateira and north along the coastal cliffs.
Getting There
Aljezur is on the inland road (EN267), about 40km north of Sagres. The village is small and walkable. There's no airport nearby; Faro is 120km away.
When to Visit
Autumn (September–November) and spring (March–May) are ideal. Summer is warm and dry but busy. Winter brings rain but also the best waves.
