Paddling the Amoreira River is a way to see the western Algarve from water level, moving slowly through a landscape that feels untouched despite being only a short drive from the coast road. The river here is tidal and sheltered, winding between low dunes and salt flats before opening out near the beach. The estuary is part of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, and the sense of space and quiet is immediate. You are not competing for room with jet skis or party boats. You are just gliding.

The two-hour tour begins with a briefing on technique and safety, delivered by an ASI-certified instructor. If you have never stood on a paddleboard before, this is where you learn the basics—how to hold the paddle, how to balance, how to fall without panicking. The river is forgiving. The water is calm, the bottom is soft, and the pace is set by the group rather than by the clock. You are given an eco-friendly board, a hybrid carbon paddle, a wetsuit and a buoyancy aid, and the kit is light enough that you are not fighting it.

What sets this apart from a simple paddle is the context. The guide shares snippets of local history and ecology as you move upriver—stories about the old watermills, the birdlife that nests in the reeds, the way the dunes shift and reform with each winter storm. It is not a formal lecture, just enough detail to make the place feel lived-in rather than generic. The estuary is home to waders, gulls and the occasional heron, and in spring and autumn you might see migratory species pausing on their way north or south.

The tour is capped at eight people per instructor, which keeps the group small and the attention personal. If someone is struggling, the instructor notices. If the group wants to stop and look at something, there is time. Photos are taken during the session and sent to you afterwards, which means you can leave your phone in the dry bag and actually be present. Transfer to and from your accommodation is included, and the operator mentions carbon offsetting, which suggests they are at least conscious of their impact.

This is not an extreme sport. You are not navigating rapids or battling ocean swell. The Amoreira is gentle, and the tour is designed to work with that rather than against it. It suits beginners, families with older children, anyone who wants to be on the water without needing advanced skills or high levels of fitness. If you are looking for adrenaline, this is not the place. If you want a couple of hours in a beautiful setting, learning something new without pressure, it delivers.

The river changes with the tide, and the guide adjusts the route accordingly. Sometimes you paddle further upstream, sometimes you stay closer to the mouth where the estuary widens and the ocean is visible beyond the dunes. Either way, the landscape is striking—low hills, scrub, patches of wildflower in spring, and always that sense of space. The light here is different from the rest of the Algarve, softer and cooler, especially in the early morning or late afternoon.

Aljezur itself is worth exploring if you have time before or after. The town is small, traditional, built around a ruined Moorish castle on a hill. There are a few cafés, a handful of local shops, and none of the resort infrastructure you find further east. If you are staying anywhere between Lagos and Sagres, the Amoreira is an easy detour, and one that shows you a side of the region most visitors miss.
