The Aqua Twister is a low, streamlined inflatable that looks vaguely like a jet ski and behaves like a rodeo bull on water. You sit astride it, grip the handles and hold on while a speedboat tows you out into the Atlantic off Armação de Pêra. The captain's job is to make the Twister spin, skip and generally misbehave, and yours is to stay on board.

This is not a gentle ride. The boat accelerates, the Twister whips behind it, and you will be flung sideways, spun in full circles and bounced across the wake. The inflatable is designed to be unstable, so every turn and wave sends it skidding and tilting. Falling off is common, and the crew will circle back to haul you out of the water and send you off again if you want another go. It is loud, chaotic and over quickly, but the adrenaline lingers.

The activity takes place just offshore from Armação de Pêra's long beach, in water deep enough to tow safely but close enough that you can still see the town and the cliffs stretching east. The setting is beautiful, though you will not spend much time admiring it while you are being whipped around at speed. The crew knows the local waters well and will adjust the ride based on sea conditions and how much chaos you seem to be enjoying.

This suits groups of friends, families with older children and anyone who likes the kind of activity that makes you scream and laugh in equal measure. It is not for very young kids, anyone uncomfortable in open water or those who prefer their beach time calm. A reasonable level of confidence in the sea is helpful, as is a willingness to get thoroughly soaked and possibly dunked more than once. Swimwear is essential, and anything you bring on the Twister will likely end up in the ocean, so leave valuables on the beach.

The ride is brief but intense, and it is often done as part of a longer morning or afternoon on the water. If you are travelling with a group, there is usually a competitive element to see who can stay on longest, which adds to the fun. The crew is experienced at judging what level of intensity each rider can handle, so if you want it wilder, ask. If you want a slightly gentler version, they can do that too, though it rather defeats the purpose.

Armação de Pêra is easy to reach by car and has parking near the beach, though it fills up in high season. The town itself is a working resort with cafés, ice cream and a long promenade, so you can make a half-day of it. The Twister is one of several water activities offered from the same stretch of sand, so if one person in your group wants something calmer or faster, there are usually options nearby.

Free cancellation is available, which is useful given that sea conditions can change and high winds or rough water may mean the activity is postponed. The operator will contact you if that happens. Bookings are private, so you are not sharing your Twister with strangers, and the crew will brief you on the basics before you head out. The whole experience is over in ten minutes or so, but the memories and the bruises may last a bit longer.
