The Crazy Cookie is exactly what it sounds like: a large round inflatable that looks vaguely edible and behaves nothing like one. You lie flat on top of this buoyant cushion while a speedboat tows you out into the Atlantic off Armação de Pêra, and then the real fun begins. The captain's job is to make the cookie spin, bounce, skip and generally lose its mind across the waves, and yours is to hang on.
This is not a gentle drift along the coast. The boat accelerates, the cookie whips behind it, and you will be flung sideways, spun in circles and occasionally airborne for a split second before slamming back onto the water. There are handles to grip, and you will need them. Falling off is part of the experience for many people, and the crew will circle back to haul you aboard and send you out again if you want another go. It is loud, wet and gleefully chaotic.
Armação de Pêra's wide beach is the launch point, and the activity takes place just offshore where the water is deep enough to tow safely but close enough that you can still see the town's whitewashed buildings and the cliffs stretching east toward Benagil. The setting is beautiful, though you will not spend much time admiring it while you are being whipped around at speed.
This suits groups of friends, families with older children and anyone who enjoys the kind of activity that makes you scream and laugh in equal measure. It is not for very young kids, anyone uncomfortable in open water or those who prefer their beach time calm and horizontal. A reasonable level of confidence in the sea is helpful, as is a willingness to get thoroughly soaked and possibly dunked.
The activity is brief but intense, and it is often done as part of a longer morning or afternoon on the water. Wear swimwear you can move in, leave valuables on the beach and expect to come back dripping and grinning. If you are travelling with a group, there is often a competitive element to see who can stay on longest, which adds to the atmosphere.
Armação de Pêra is easy to reach by car and has ample parking near the beach, though it fills up in high season. The town itself is a working resort with cafés, ice cream and a long promenade, so you can make a half-day of it. The Crazy Cookie is one of several water activities offered from the same stretch of sand, so if one person in your group wants something calmer or faster, there are usually options nearby.
