Praia da Arrifana is a popular beach on the southwestern Algarve coast, known for consistent Atlantic swell, a sheltered cove, and a working fishing village perched on the cliffs above. The beach is sandy and relatively small, set between high sandstone cliffs that create an amphitheater-like enclosure. The cliffs are a distinctive rust-orange color, weathered and rounded.

The beach is accessible via a steep path from the village. The water is cool and the waves can be substantial, making it a magnet for surfers and bodyboarders. The swell is consistent because the beach faces directly into Atlantic weather systems. Even on relatively calm days, there's enough wave action for water sports enthusiasts.

The fishing village above the beach is very small—a handful of houses, a couple of restaurants and cafes, minimal infrastructure. The village exists primarily to serve the working fishing community; tourism is secondary. This is another place where you can see nets being mended, boats repaired, and the practical side of coastal livelihoods.

The Fisherman's Trail passes through the area, connecting Arrifana with other villages and beaches to the north and south. Walking the trail offers a perspective on the coastline that car travel cannot provide—the sense of scale, the difficulty of the terrain, the isolation.

Praia da Arrifana represents a type of Algarve beach that has largely remained undeveloped: a place where fishing continues, tourism is low-key, and the landscape dominates the human infrastructure. The rust-orange cliffs, the consistent swell, the quiet village—together they create a landscape that feels genuine rather than constructed.
