The boat trip to Benagil is the Algarve's most-booked coastal outing, and for good reason. The cave itself — a collapsed sea grotto with a circular skylight and a small beach inside — photographs better than almost anything else on Portugal's southern shore, and the cliffs either side of it are genuinely spectacular. This tour covers the stretch between Armação de Pêra and Marinha Beach, taking in around a dozen caves and rock formations along the way.

You leave from one of the main beach launch points and head east or west depending on swell and tide. The boats are modern rigid inflatables with individual seats and a canopy for shade, seating perhaps fifteen to twenty passengers. The skipper will slow or stop at each major cave mouth, narrate a bit of geology or local lore, and give you time to get your photos. Benagil itself is the centrepiece — you'll pause just outside the entrance while everyone leans over the gunwale with their phones.

Marinha Beach appears on every Algarve postcard for a reason: twin limestone stacks framing turquoise water, accessible only by a steep path or by sea. Seeing it from the water gives you the full sweep of the cliff line without the crowds on the sand. The route also passes smaller, less famous grottoes — some you can enter, others you view from outside depending on conditions.

This is a fair-weather trip. If there's any meaningful swell, the tour will be postponed or rerouted to calmer sections of coast. The boats are stable but you will get wet if the sea is up, so bring a waterproof bag for your phone and wear something that dries quickly. Sunscreen is non-negotiable in summer — the canopy helps but you're still exposed for most of the journey.

The tour suits families, older visitors and anyone who wants the coastal spectacle without the effort of kayaking. It does not suit anyone prone to seasickness on small boats, or anyone hoping for a quiet, uncrowded experience — this is a popular route and you will share the caves with other boats. Early-morning or late-afternoon departures in shoulder season are your best chance of relative solitude.

Most departures are from Armação de Pêra, though some operators also run from Portimão or Albufeira. The meeting point is usually a beach kiosk; arrive fifteen minutes early to check in and get your life jacket. Parking near the launch beaches can be tight in July and August, so allow extra time or consider a taxi.
