Ferragudo is a compact fishing village on the eastern side of the Arade estuary, facing Portimão across the water. It has narrow streets, a working harbour, a handful of cafés and a relaxed pace that makes it a good base for exploring the surrounding area by bike. This is a self-guided rental, not a tour, so you set your own route and your own timetable, with the help of pre-loaded smartphone routes and advice from the shop staff before you leave.

The electric bikes take the sting out of the Algarve's hills, which can be steep and unforgiving in summer heat. You can choose a short loop around Ferragudo itself, a coastal ride west towards Carvoeiro and the clifftop formations at Algar Seco, or a longer outing to Alvor, Portimão, or even inland to Silves. The most ambitious routes head east towards Benagil or Praia da Marinha, though these involve a full day and some navigation through quieter back roads.

Before you set off, the team will talk you through the bike controls, recommend a route based on how much time you have and how confident you are, and make sure you have a helmet, lock and phone holder. The bikes themselves are comfortable and well-maintained, and the fat-tyre option is particularly good for sandy tracks or rougher paths near the coast.

This setup works well for couples or small groups who want flexibility and do not want to be tied to a guided schedule. It also suits anyone staying in Ferragudo or nearby who wants a practical way to reach beaches, villages or viewpoints without driving. The Algarve is not a cycling paradise in the Dutch sense, as many roads are narrow and busy, but there are quieter routes if you are willing to plan a little and take your time.

The rental runs for a full day, which gives you plenty of scope to stop for lunch, explore a beach, or simply take a longer route at a leisurely pace. The bikes have decent range, but keep an eye on the battery if you are heading inland or tackling a lot of hills. There is a special offer available at present, which brings the cost down further.

Ferragudo is easy to reach by car, with parking near the village centre, and also accessible by bus from Portimão. The shop is clearly marked and the staff are helpful. Free cancellation applies, which is useful if your plans change or the weather turns. This is not a guided experience, so you will not have commentary or company, but if you are comfortable navigating by phone and prefer to explore at your own speed, it is a practical and affordable way to see more of the Algarve than you would on foot.
