Armação de Pêra's inflatable waterpark floats just offshore, a brightly coloured obstacle course anchored in the calm water of the bay. It is made up of seven interconnected inflatable elements — slides, climbing walls, balance beams, trampolines — that you scramble over, slide down, and inevitably fall off. The whole thing is designed to be ridiculous and exhausting in equal measure, and it succeeds on both counts. You spend your session slipping, jumping, and laughing your way around the course, usually in the company of strangers doing exactly the same thing.

The waterpark is open to anyone who can swim and is comfortable in open water. You wear a buoyancy aid, which is provided, and the inflatables are tethered securely so there is no risk of drifting out to sea. The water is shallow enough that you can stand in most places if you need to, though you will spend more time clinging to the sides of the obstacles than standing on the bottom. Lifeguards are stationed on the platform and keep an eye on the whole setup, stepping in if anyone gets into difficulty.

Each session lasts an hour, which sounds short but is usually more than enough. The constant climbing, balancing, and swimming is harder work than it looks, and most people are ready to get out and collapse on the beach by the time their slot is up. The course is designed to be challenging without being dangerous, so expect to fall in repeatedly but not to get hurt. The inflatables are soft, the landings are wet, and the worst that usually happens is a mouthful of seawater and a bruised ego.

You will be sharing the course with other people, and part of the fun is watching everyone else wipe out as spectacularly as you do. It works well for birthday parties, stag and hen groups, or just a morning out with friends. Families with older children also use it, though younger kids may find some of the obstacles too difficult or intimidating.

The waterpark is located on the main beach at Armação de Pêra, a mid-sized resort town with a long sandy stretch and plenty of cafés and restaurants within walking distance. The beach itself is popular and can get crowded in summer, but the waterpark is set far enough offshore that it feels separate from the sunbathing masses. You check in at a kiosk on the beach, get fitted with your buoyancy aid, and swim or wade out to the platform.

Free cancellation is available, which is useful given that the waterpark only operates in calm conditions and may close if the sea is too rough. The entry price is low, and there are no hidden costs once you arrive. Reviews are mixed, with some people loving the silliness of it and others finding it less exciting than they expected.
