Armação de Pêra sits right in the middle of the Algarve's most spectacular stretch of coastline, where golden cliffs fold into sea caves and hidden beaches that you simply cannot reach on foot. This hour-long boat tour takes you out from the town's working harbour to explore that sculpted shoreline at water level, passing through cave mouths and beneath natural arches that have been carved by millennia of Atlantic swell.

The centrepiece is Benagil Cave itself, a cathedral-sized grotto with a circular skylight open to the sky and a small sand beach inside. You will glide right in, cameras ready, and the light pouring through that oculus onto the pale sand is as good as any photograph suggests. But Benagil is not the only draw. The route also takes in around ten caves and fifteen beaches, including Praia da Marinha with its iconic rock stacks, the sheltered cove at Cova Redonda, the Arch at Albandeira and the Gruta do Capitão. Each has its own character, and the skipper will point out features and formations as you go.

This is a popular trip, and for good reason. The boats are small enough to enter the caves but stable enough for most sea states, and departures run throughout the day in season. Because the tour is only an hour, it suits families with younger children, though note that kids must be accompanied by an adult for safety. The sea can be choppy, especially in the afternoon when the wind picks up, so if you are prone to motion sickness, an earlier departure is usually calmer. Bring sun protection, a hat and something to keep your phone or camera dry if spray is likely. The boats do not have much shade. You will not land on any of the beaches, so this is purely a sightseeing trip, but the perspective from the water is far better than any clifftop viewpoint.

Armação de Pêra is easy to reach by car, with parking near the marina, and also served by regional buses from Albufeira and Portimão. The meeting point is clearly signposted at the harbour.
