Portimao: Dolphins & Benagil Caves - Catamaran

About This Experience

Departing from Portimão Marina, this experience takes you out into the open ocean to encounter dolphins and explore the impressive rock formations of the Algarve coastline.

This catamaran cruise from Portimão combines two of the Algarve's most popular marine experiences: dolphin watching in the open ocean and a coastal cruise to the Benagil Cave. The trip lasts around two and a half hours and is conducted on a stable, spacious catamaran with both open and covered deck areas, making it a comfortable option even if the weather turns or you prefer to stay out of the sun.

The departure point is Portimão Marina, which is easy to reach and has good facilities. Once aboard, the catamaran heads out into the Atlantic in search of dolphins. The most commonly sighted species here are common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, and a marine biologist accompanies the trip to explain their behaviour, diet and the ecology of the region. The biologist's commentary adds context that you would not get on a standard boat tour, and they are good at spotting the dolphins before most passengers do.

Dolphin sightings are never guaranteed, as these are wild animals in open water, but the success rate is high, particularly in the warmer months when the dolphins are more active near the surface. When a pod is located, the catamaran will slow down and give you time to watch and take photos. The dolphins often approach the boat out of curiosity, and seeing them in their natural environment, rather than in captivity, is a different experience entirely.

After the dolphin watching, the catamaran turns back towards the coast and cruises east along the cliffs towards Benagil. The rock formations along this stretch are some of the most dramatic in the Algarve, with sea stacks, arches and caves carved into the golden limestone. The catamaran does not enter the Benagil Cave itself, but it does approach close enough for you to see the famous dome and the circular skylight from the water. This is not a landing tour, so you will not step onto the beach inside the cave, but the view from the boat is still impressive.

Depending on sea conditions and available time, there may be a swimming stop where you can jump into the ocean. The water is clear and usually calm, though the temperature varies depending on the season. Summer and early autumn are the warmest, while spring can still be brisk. The catamaran is equipped with a toilet and free WiFi, and there is a bar on board if you want a drink during the trip.

This cruise suits people who want a relaxed, informative outing on the water without the need for kayaking or other physical activity. It is suitable for families, though very young children may get restless during the dolphin search if the sightings take time. The catamaran's stability makes it a good choice if you are prone to seasickness, as it handles the swell better than smaller boats.

Portimão is well connected by road and public transport, and the marina is within walking distance of the town centre. The tour runs year-round, though summer offers the best weather and the highest chance of calm seas. Bring sun protection, a hat, and a light layer in case the breeze picks up once you are offshore. The combination of wildlife, coastal scenery and the chance to see Benagil from the water makes this a well-rounded introduction to the Algarve's marine environment.
