The Benagil Cave is the Algarve's most photographed sea cave, and for good reason — the domed ceiling with its natural skylight, the golden sand inside, the way the light falls through the opening onto the water — it is genuinely spectacular. But it is also genuinely crowded, especially in summer when dozens of boats and kayaks converge on the entrance at once. This tour sidesteps the worst of that by starting from Praia do Carvalho, a smaller beach just five minutes along the coast, where the crowds thin out considerably.

You meet at Carvalho, a lovely little cove enclosed by ochre cliffs and accessible through a short tunnel cut into the rock. From there, it is a two-hour paddle along the coastline, exploring sea caves, natural arches, and rock formations that have been carved by millennia of Atlantic waves. The kayaks are stable double sit-on-tops, and the pace is relaxed — this is not a fitness challenge. If you can paddle a kayak at all, you will manage fine.

The guides — Egas, Caio, and Francisco — know this coastline intimately and share stories about the geology, the marine life, and the history of the fishing communities that once worked these waters. They also take photos and videos throughout the trip using 4K cameras, which are included in the price and sent to you afterwards. It is a relief not to have to worry about keeping your phone dry or missing a moment because you are fumbling with a waterproof case.

Groups are capped at twelve, which makes a real difference. You are not part of a flotilla, and the guides have time to answer questions and adjust the pace to suit the group. The tour does visit Benagil Cave, but it also takes you to quieter spots that most boat tours skip — smaller caves, hidden beaches, and sections of coastline where you might have the water to yourself.

This is a morning or afternoon outing, and it suits most people — families, couples, solo travellers. You do not need to be an athlete, but you do need to be comfortable in the water and able to paddle for a couple of hours with breaks. The sea can be choppy, and if you are prone to seasickness, consider that. The tour runs year-round, though summer offers the calmest conditions and the warmest water.

Praia do Carvalho is near Lagoa, roughly halfway between Albufeira and Portimão. There is parking above the beach, and the walk down through the tunnel is part of the charm. After the paddle, the beach is perfect for a swim or a rest in the sun before heading off.
