About This Place
Small fishing village on the southwest coast within the Costa Vicentina Natural Park. One of the least developed coastal villages in the Algarve with good beach and few restaurants.
Salema is a small, traditional fishing village on the western Algarve coast, about 10km west of Lagos. The village clusters around a small sandy beach backed by fishing boats and a working harbor. It's a place where fishing remains the primary economic activity, tourism is secondary, and the landscape hasn't been reshaped by resort development.
The beach is small but sandy, sheltered by rocky headlands on both sides. Fishing boats are pulled up on the sand, nets are dried and mended on the beach, and the waterfront is oriented toward the fishing community rather than tourists. The water is relatively calm because of the sheltering headlands.
The village has minimal infrastructure: a handful of small guesthouses, a few simple restaurants serving fresh fish and seafood from daily catches, no shops or significant tourism facilities. Despite the lack of modern amenities, the village retains an authentic atmosphere that has largely disappeared from more developed coastal areas.
The Fisherman's Trail passes through Salema (or nearby), connecting it to other villages and beaches along the southwestern coast. Walking the trail offers a perspective on the landscape and the practical realities of coastal living that cannot be gained from brief beach visits.
Salema appeals to visitors seeking authenticity, simplicity, and a genuine sense of place rather than tourism infrastructure. The village is small enough that a few busy days in summer can create crowding, but it retains its character. The primary activity is sitting by the beach, watching fishing boats, eating fresh fish at a waterfront restaurant, and understanding what coastal life looked like before mass tourism transformed the Algarve.
