Spring is the Algarve's best-kept secret. Wildflowers carpet the cliffs, the water warms up, and you'll have the beaches almost to yourself. Here's your complete spring planning guide.
The Algarve gets 300+ days of sunshine a year, but spring is when the region truly shines. Temperatures climb from a comfortable 18°C in April to a beach-ready 25°C by June. The summer crowds haven't arrived yet, accommodation prices are 30-40% lower, and the landscape is at its greenest.
April is the last month of the Algarve's green season. The cliffs along the Seven Hanging Valleys trail are covered in wildflowers, and the temperatures (16-22°C) are ideal for long coastal walks.
The water is still cool (16-17°C), but wetsuits make kayaking and SUP comfortable. This is the best month for the Benagil caves before the summer boat traffic.
By May, the Algarve warms up properly. Water temperatures hit 18-19°C, warm enough for swimming at the sheltered south coast beaches. The surf season on the west coast continues with consistent swells and fewer surfers than summer.
May is also perfect for wine touring. The vineyards are lush, the estates are quiet, and you can often get private tastings that would require weeks of advance booking in August.
June combines summer weather (25-28°C, water at 20-21°C) with pre-peak pricing and availability. The Algarve's festival season kicks off with Santos Populares celebrations across every town.
This is the best month for dolphin watching, as pods move closer to shore following warmer currents.
