Historic Roman bridge in Tavira

About This Place

The Algarve's most elegant town — 37 churches, a Roman bridge, cobbled streets of merchant houses, and ferry access to the pristine island beaches of the Ria Formosa.

Tavira is often called the prettiest town in the Algarve, and it's hard to argue. Straddling the Gilão river, its elegant centre is a maze of cobbled streets, traditional tiled houses, and grand merchant villas — all watched over by the ruins of a Moorish castle on the hill above.

The City of Churches

Tavira has 37 churches — more per square metre than almost anywhere in Portugal. The Igreja da Misericórdia is the standout, with a palatial Renaissance interior, but the smaller chapels dotted throughout the old town are equally worth exploring. The four-sided rooftops (telhados de tesoura) seen across the town are a distinctive Tavira architectural feature.

Island Beaches

Some of the Algarve's finest beaches lie just offshore. Ilha de Tavira is a long, pristine sandbar island reached by a short ferry from the town centre — soft white sand stretching as far as the eye can see, with warm, calm water. Further east, Praia do Barril is reached by a charming miniature train across the Ria Formosa, passing the famous Anchor Cemetery — hundreds of rusting anchors left by a former tuna-fishing community.

Ria Formosa

Tavira sits on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, one of Portugal's most important wetland ecosystems. Boat excursions explore the lagoons, salt marshes, and barrier islands, with excellent birdwatching — the park is home to flamingos, spoonbills, and many wading species.

Santa Luzia

Just east of Tavira, the fishing village of Santa Luzia is known as the octopus capital of the Algarve. The small waterfront restaurants here serve some of the best polvo (octopus) you'll find anywhere in Portugal.

Practical Info

Tavira is about 30 minutes east of Faro by car, or reachable by train. The old town, castle, churches, and river walk can fill a half-day, or make it a full day by adding a beach trip to Ilha de Tavira or Barril. The town has a good selection of restaurants, cafés, and small hotels.
