The João de Arens area, just west of Lagos, is one of the Algarve's quieter stretches of coast, a landscape of ochre cliffs, sea caves and rocky outcrops that you can explore by stand-up paddleboard or kayak without the crowds that gather further east. This two-hour tour takes you out from one of the region's most beautiful beaches into water that is clear enough to see the rocks and marine life below, and calm enough on most days to suit beginners.

You are paddling through a coastal environment that is still largely unspoiled, where the cliffs rise in layers of sandstone and limestone and the caves open up like rooms carved by the Atlantic. The route takes you into grottoes where the light filters through cracks in the rock, around headlands where the water deepens suddenly, and along sections of coast that are inaccessible on foot. The clarity of the water is one of the highlights, and on a calm day you can see shoals of fish moving beneath the board or kayak.

The tour is designed to be accessible to those with little or no experience, and the guides will adjust the pace and the route to match the group's ability. If you have paddled before, you will find the conditions here forgiving, with enough shelter from the cliffs to keep the swell manageable. If you have not, the two-hour duration gives you time to find your balance and build confidence without turning the trip into a trial.
