Aljezur's sweet potato festival celebrates the town's IGP-protected crop with soups, cakes and producer stalls — dates to be confirmed for 2026.
The batata-doce de Aljezur has protected geographical status, which locals will tell you about at length and with justification — the sandy soil and Atlantic air behind the west coast produce a sweeter, denser sweet potato than anything grown inland.
The festival is the town's biggest weekend of the year. Producers bring the harvest, and the restaurants and associations put it into everything: soups, migas, cakes, tarts, ice cream, liqueur, and a surprising number of things a root vegetable was never meant to become. There is usually live music, folk groups and a craft market alongside.
It falls in late November, which is off-season on the west coast — quiet roads, empty beaches and a genuine local crowd rather than a visitor one.
