Two and a half weeks of Portugal's Popular Saints celebrations in Loulé — neighbourhood arraiais with grilled sardines, basil pots, paper marriages, and street dancing in honour of Santo António, São João and São Pedro.
Santos Populares is the high point of the Portuguese summer-festival calendar — three weeks of neighbourhood parties (arraiais) honouring Santo António (13 June), São João (24 June) and São Pedro (29 June).
In Loulé, individual freguesias and bairros take it in turns to host the open-air parties: grilled sardines, caldo verde, beer and red wine, basil pots stuffed with paper marriage vows, and a band that won't stop before midnight. Each night moves between neighbourhoods, so the centre is busy somewhere most evenings of the period.
It's noisier and more authentically Portuguese than the tourist-facing festivals — make the effort to join in.
