The Ria Formosa is a sprawling jigsaw of tidal lagoons, salt marsh, and barrier islands that stretches for sixty kilometres along the eastern Algarve, and it's one of the most important wetland habitats in Europe. A boat trip here is less about speed or spectacle and more about drifting quietly through shallow channels while the birdlife goes about its business around you.

This is a four-hour outing, usually departing mid-morning to catch the tide and the light. You'll be on a small boat—often a traditional wooden launch or a shallow-draft vessel that can nose into the narrower creeks without disturbing the mudflats. The pace is slow, the engine often cut to a murmur, and your guide will have binoculars and a scope for picking out distant shapes on the sandbars.

More than two hundred bird species have been recorded in the Ria Formosa, and depending on the season you might see flamingos wading in the shallows, spoonbills sweeping their bills through the water, or black-winged stilts picking their way along the tide line. In spring and autumn the lagoon is a staging post for migrants, and the variety can be astonishing—terns, egrets, avocets, and occasionally something rarer that sends the serious birders into quiet excitement.

Even if you're not a dedicated twitcher, the setting is worth the trip. The water is glass-calm on windless days, the islands are fringed with dune grasses and wildflowers, and the light has a soft, coastal quality that makes everything look like a watercolour. You'll pass fishing huts, oyster beds, and the occasional anchorage where traditional boats are still worked by hand.

The trip suits anyone who enjoys being on the water and doesn't mind a slower pace. It's not a white-knuckle ride, and there's no swimming or scrambling involved—just sitting, watching, and listening to someone who knows the ecosystem well. Families with older children often enjoy it, though very young kids may get restless if the birdlife is quiet.

Prices start from €35 per person, and most departures are from Faro, Olhão, or Tavira, all of which sit on the edge of the park. Morning trips tend to be calmer and cooler, which is preferable in summer. Bring sun protection, a hat, and a bottle of water—there's little shade on the boat. If you have your own binoculars, bring them; if not, guides usually have spares to share.
