Benagil Cave sits a short paddle east along the coast from the beach that shares its name, a sea cave with a collapsed roof that has turned it into one of the Algarve's most visited natural landmarks. The photographs you will have seen show a dome of honey-coloured limestone with a circular opening to the sky, light pouring onto a crescent of sand inside, and kayakers or paddleboarders drifting in the shallows. The reality is both more striking and more crowded than the images suggest, but catching it at sunrise or sunset shifts the balance back toward the former.

This ninety-minute kayak tour departs from Benagil beach, a small sheltered cove with a slipway and a seasonal café.
