This is a two-hour guided paddle along a stretch of coast that has been carved into arches, grottoes and cathedral-like chambers by centuries of Atlantic swell, with time to stop, swim, and take photographs in some of the clearest water in southern Portugal.

The route takes you along the cliffs between Benagil and the neighbouring beaches, weaving in and out of caves that range from narrow slots to vast open domes. The most famous is Benagil Cave itself, a hollow chamber with a circular skylight and a small sandy beach at its centre, but the tour includes several others along the way—some dark and echoing, others lit by shafts of sunlight that turn the water electric blue. The rock here is soft limestone, layered in shades of gold and cream, and the waves have sculpted it into shapes that feel almost deliberate in their symmetry.

Your guide will lead the way, pointing out the best angles for photographs, explaining how the caves were formed, and adjusting the route depending on the swell and the tide. There are stops for swimming, and on a calm day the water inside the caves is so clear you can see the rock formations continuing below the surface. This is a popular outing, and deservedly so. It offers access to places that are otherwise unreachable, and the experience of floating inside a sea cave, surrounded by sculpted rock and soft light, is something that lingers long after you have dried off. It suits anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and comfort in the water, though it is not ideal for very young children or anyone with limited mobility. The two-hour duration is well judged—long enough to feel like a proper exploration, short enough that your arms will not be aching by the end.

Most departures are from Benagil beach, where you will be fitted with a life jacket, given a brief safety talk, and launched from the sand. The best conditions are typically in the morning or late afternoon, when the sea is calmer and the caves less crowded. Bring sun cream, a hat that will not blow off, and a dry bag if you want to protect your phone or camera. The water is cool even in summer, but once you are moving, it feels refreshing rather than cold. Expect to get wet, and plan accordingly.
