The sea caves between Benagil and Marinha are the Algarve's most photographed stretch of coastline, and kayaking is the only way to enter them properly. Tour boats can get close, but they cannot slip through the narrow openings or beach inside the larger caves where the sand is soft and the light filters down through gaps in the rock. This is a guided paddle, not a rental, and the difference is significant—local knowledge matters when you are navigating tidal caves and reading the swell.

The tour begins with a safety briefing and a quick lesson in paddling technique, which is more useful than it sounds if you have not kayaked before. The sit-on-top kayaks are stable and forgiving, but you will need to paddle steadily for stretches, and the rhythm of it matters more than strength. The guide sets the pace, leads the group through the safest routes, and points out features you would otherwise miss—a hidden arch, a cave with two entrances, a section where the water is deep enough to see fish below.

Benagil cave is the centrepiece, and the approach is always impressive. The entrance is wide and low, the water inside calm and green, and the skylight above floods the interior with a soft, diffused light that makes the sand glow. The beach inside is small and often crowded with other kayakers and swimmers, but the acoustics are strange and the sense of scale is startling. You can beach your kayak, step out onto the sand, and spend a few minutes taking photos or simply looking up at the sky through the opening.

The rest of the tour is a succession of smaller caves and rock formations, each with its own character. Some are tight squeezes where you have to duck your head and trust the guide's line. Others are wide and airy, with light pouring in from multiple openings. The water is clear and cold, and in the right conditions you can see the rocks and sand below, along with the occasional shoal of fish. There are opportunities to swim, though the sea temperature is bracing even in summer, and the current can be stronger than it looks.

This is not a tour for young children, nervous swimmers, or anyone who dislikes being on the water for extended periods. The paddling is continuous, the kayak is small and low to the water, and you will get wet—sometimes very wet, depending on the swell and the caves you enter. It suits active travellers, couples, and groups looking for something more hands-on than a boat tour. Families with teenagers will enjoy it, provided everyone is comfortable in the water and happy to paddle.

Bring sun cream, a towel, and a dry bag for anything you want to keep dry. Phones and cameras are risky unless they are waterproof, and even then you will need to secure them carefully. Footwear that can go in the water is essential, and a hat with a strap is worth having so you do not lose it when you duck into a low cave. The tour departs from Benagil beach, which is reached by a steep path from the clifftop car park. Arrive early if you are driving, as parking is limited and the beach fills up quickly in summer. The setting is beautiful, the cliffs golden and sculpted, and the water is calm enough in the mornings to make the paddle feel less daunting than it might sound.
