You begin on the sand with a briefing that covers safety, wave selection, paddling technique and the mechanics of standing up. For absolute beginners, this is where the foundations are laid; for those who have surfed before, it is a chance to refresh and correct bad habits before heading into the water. This lesson suits anyone reasonably comfortable in the sea who wants to try surfing in a structured, supportive environment. It is equally appropriate for solo travellers, couples or small groups, and the mixed-ability approach means friends with different experience levels can book together without anyone feeling out of their depth. It is less ideal for very young children or for anyone with mobility issues, as getting in and out of the water and manoeuvring a board requires a baseline level of fitness and coordination.

The Alentejo beaches used for these lessons are less developed than their Algarve counterparts, which means fewer crowds but also fewer facilities. Bring your own towel, water and sun protection, and be prepared for a bit of a walk from the car park. The water temperature is cool year-round, so wetsuits are provided and strongly recommended even in summer. If you are driving from the Algarve, allow an extra hour each way; the journey is scenic but not fast.
