A private full-day jeep safari is the Algarve hinterland at your own pace, with no strangers in the back seat and the freedom to linger where you like or skip what does not interest you. You are picked up in a hard-top Land Rover Defender—eight seats, air conditioning, built for rough tracks—and driven inland by a multilingual guide who doubles as driver and storyteller. The itinerary is flexible; you set your own departure time and can adjust the route on the day, though the broad arc takes in cork forests, white-washed villages, a working farm, and a swimming stop at a natural spring if the weather allows.
The inland Algarve is a different proposition from the coast: rolling hills stitched with olive groves and carob trees, quiet roads that climb into the Serra de Monchique, and villages where Moorish influence still shows in the layout of streets and the design of chimneys. You will stop at a small distillery or farm shop for tastings—typically medronho, the local firewater made from arbutus berries, and raw honey from hives kept in the hills. Another halt is made at a farm producing organic jams, where the owner will walk you through the process and let you sample whatever is in season. There is also a cork demonstration, explaining how bark is harvested without killing the tree and why Portuguese cork remains the gold standard.
The Defender handles dirt tracks and shallow stream crossings without fuss, and the guide will take you off-tarmac if you are game for it. Expect dust in summer, mud in winter, and the occasional herd of goats blocking the road. The swimming stop—usually a clear pool fed by a spring—is weather-dependent and not guaranteed, but when it happens it is a welcome break from the heat.
