The Algarve's biggest resort town. Packed beaches, lively nightlife strip, and smaller cove beaches with a split personality: charming old town and full-on party tourist zone.
Albufeira is the Algarve's largest coastal resort, a sprawling town that blends old-world charm with modern tourism infrastructure. The historic old town sits on a hilltop overlooking the sea, its narrow cobbled streets and traditional architecture a sharp contrast to the bustling resort developments below. Whether you come for the beaches, the nightlife, or just to experience the full spectrum of Algarve tourism, Albufeira delivers in volume.
The beaches are the main draw. The central Praia dos Pescadores sits in a small harbour and can get busy, but venture east or west and you'll find dozens of smaller coves and beaches tucked beneath golden cliffs. Praia da Coelha and Praia da Oura are local favourites with easier access. Many beaches have beach bars, water sports operators, and sun-lounger rental.
The old town offers relief from the resort atmosphere. Wander the narrow streets around the Church of Nossa Senhora, climb to the castle ruins for views across the coast, and browse the small museums and galleries. The Saturday market in the lower town is still authentically local despite the tourist numbers.
Nightlife is concentrated on "the Strip" (Avenida Garret Sousa Mendes), lined with bars, clubs, and restaurants. It's not for everyone, but if you want a full night out, nowhere in the Algarve delivers quite like Albufeira. For quieter dining, the old town offers hidden restaurants and tascas (traditional eateries).
Albufeira is on the EN125, the main coastal road. Car parking is available throughout the town and surrounding areas. The town centre is walkable, though it's hilly. Local buses connect the beach areas. Faro airport is 40km west.
Summer (June–September) brings the biggest crowds and highest prices. The sea is warmest July–August. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer the best balance of good weather and manageable crowds.
