About This Route
The Algarve's most famous coastal hike, featuring dramatic cliffs, hidden coves, and the iconic Benagil Cave viewpoint.
Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos)
Often described as one of Europe's most beautiful coastal walks, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail follows the stunning cliffs between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale de Centeanes near Carvoeiro.
Why "Hanging Valleys"?
The trail's name comes from seven seasonal stream valleys that have been left "hanging" above the sea as the soft limestone coastline has eroded. These dramatic formations, combined with sea stacks, arches, and hidden beaches, create an unforgettable landscape.
Highlights
- Praia da Marinha - Voted one of the world's 100 most beautiful beaches
- Benagil Cave - View the famous sea cave from the clifftop sinkhole
- Praia do Carvalho - Access via a hand-carved tunnel through the cliff
- Alfanzina Lighthouse - Panoramic ocean views
Hiking Tips
Start early in the morning to avoid crowds and midday heat. The trail is entirely exposed with no shade. Bring at least 2 liters of water per person. The cliff edges can be unstable - stay on marked paths.
Getting There
The trail is linear, so you'll need to arrange transport back to your starting point. Most hikers start from Praia da Marinha (larger car park) and finish at Vale de Centeanes. Local taxis can shuttle you between trailheads.
